

Dr. James L. Hill

Dr. James L. Hill, a retired Professor of English at Albany State University, has a distinguished legacy in academia and community service. During his tenure at ASU, he held various leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of English, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Hill was instrumental in establishing several impactful programs, such as ASU’s first Study Abroad Program, Summer Humanities Programs for high school students and teachers, the Visiting Black Writers Series, and the Big Read Program.
A dedicated community leader, Dr. Hill served as President of the Beta Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Southern Region Director for three years, and is a founding member of both the 100 Black Men of Albany and the local NPHC. His contributions earned him the Georgia Governor’s Award in the Humanities in 1987.
Nationally, he has chaired prominent organizations, including the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the College Section of the National Council of Teachers of English. He also served as President of the Georgia Council of Teachers of English. Dr. Hill is the author of numerous articles, editor of Resources for Teachers of Georgia History, and General Editor of a ten-book series.
